The Merinid Tombs are 14th-century ruins perched dramatically above the city of Fez. The structures themselves are in an advanced state of ruin, but the primary appeal lies not in the tombs themselves — it is the panoramic views over Fez and the northern mountains that draw visitors from around the world.
Sunset at the Tombs
Visitors commonly gather here at sunset to watch the city lights begin to illuminate the valley below and listen to the muezzin's calls echo through the ancient streets. The experience is one of the most moving in Morocco — a moment of stillness above the noise and beauty of the medina.
Getting There
Access is available via a paved path from the western main road or by taxi from Bab Bou Jeloud (approximately 12 Moroccan Dirhams). The walk takes around 20 minutes on foot from the Blue Gate.
The site is best visited in the hour before sunset. The area should not be lingered in after nightfall.
