Fez can be visited in any month of the year, but the experience changes dramatically with the seasons. Understanding those differences will help you choose the timing that best matches what you're looking for.
Spring (March–May) — The Best Season
Spring is widely considered the finest time to visit Fez. Temperatures are warm but not oppressive — typically 18–25°C — and the city is at its most beautiful, with the gardens of the medina in full flower. The light is ideal for photography, the streets are lively without being overwhelmed, and the countryside surrounding Fez is vivid green from the winter rains. April and May are particularly recommended.
Summer (June–August) — Hot but Vibrant
Fez in summer can be intensely hot — temperatures regularly reach 35–40°C in July and August, and the narrow medina lanes trap the heat. That said, the city remains fascinating and the heat can be managed by exploring early morning and evening, resting during midday, and taking full advantage of the riad's shaded courtyard. Summer sees more visitors than spring but is far from overwhelmed.
Autumn (September–November) — An Excellent Alternative
September and October offer conditions very similar to spring — warm, pleasant, and ideal for exploring. The summer crowds have largely departed and prices may be lower. November brings the first rains and noticeably cooler temperatures, particularly after dark.
Winter (December–February) — Quiet and Atmospheric
Winter is Fez's quietest season. Temperatures are cool — between 8–15°C during the day, colder at night — and rain is possible. But the medina takes on a different, more intimate character: fewer tourists, lower prices, and a slower pace that allows genuine connection with daily life. The low season is also when you're most likely to have a riad almost to yourself.
Ramadan
Visiting during Ramadan is a unique and memorable experience — the medina comes alive after sunset with Iftar celebrations, music, and street food. Many restaurants close during daylight hours, so dining logistics require some planning, but the atmosphere is extraordinary and unlike any other time of year.
